How your DIY heat pump project works
With a DiY-Heizung heat pump installation kit, you carry out suitable installation work yourself, with support for planning, system design and commissioning. Your project starts with information about your building, rather than a shopping basket.
We develop a project-specific system based on the heat load, radiators or underfloor heating, the work you want to do yourself and the installation conditions. You receive the specified components, planning documents and support with installation. Tasks that require qualified professionals are clearly defined, and commissioning is prepared in advance.

The short answer
A DiY-Heizung project takes place in eight steps:
- Submit your project details
- Receive a free initial assessment
- Discuss your project with us
- Complete the technical planning and calculations
- Receive your kit and documents
- Carry out the agreed DIY work
- Have the installation checked
- Arrange commissioning and ongoing support
After each step, there is a clear result, so you know what decision has been made, what documents are missing and what needs to be prepared next.
How is a DIY installation kit different from buying online?
A straightforward online purchase usually supplies a unit and selected accessories. It does not automatically establish whether the capacity, radiators or underfloor heating, pipe sizes, storage tank, controls and hydraulic design suit your building.
The DiY-Heizung concept combines three areas:
- Technical planning: the heat pump and system components are specified to suit your building.
- DIY installation: you carry out suitable tasks and reduce the amount of paid installation work.
- Professional support: installation checks, required specialist work and commissioning are prepared or organised.
1. Provide project data
Tell us about your building, existing heating, radiators or underfloor heating, and the tasks you would like to do yourself. Floor plans, energy consumption figures and photos of the plant room, manifolds and possible installation locations are helpful. Missing documents do not automatically rule out a project, but we need to identify gaps early and obtain the information where necessary.
Result: we have a structured overview of your project.
2. Free initial assessment
We assess whether a heat pump and our DIY approach are suitable in principle. We consider possible installation locations, pipe routes, radiators or underfloor heating, and space for storage tanks and hydraulic components. This initial assessment is not the final system design; that follows when you commission the technical planning.
Result: You get an initial assessment and a list of missing information.
3. Discuss the project personally
We discuss installation locations, pipe routes, domestic hot water, heating circuits, noise protection, defrost water and electrical requirements.
Result: the system concept, your DIY tasks and outstanding work are agreed.
4. Specialist planning and calculations
Depending on your project, we calculate or specify the heat load, heat emitters, system temperatures, heat pump, storage tanks, flow rates, pipe sizes and hydraulic connections.
Choosing a system by floor area or consumption alone is not enough. The calculations establish the required capacity and whether the existing radiators or underfloor heating are sufficient.
Result: the technical design and hydraulic concept are established.
5. Complete set and documents
Based on the plans, we select the heat pump, storage tanks, pumps, valves, safety components, controls and installation materials. Depending on the agreed service package, you receive a hydraulic diagram, drawings, a materials list, manufacturer documents and installation instructions.
Staged deliveries can be arranged if you need some components earlier, subject to availability and the installation schedule.
Result: the quote, supplied components and documents match your project.
6. Install the heat pump yourself
Carry out the agreed tasks in line with the plans and manufacturer instructions. These may include the foundation, wall penetrations, positioning the equipment, heating pipework, hydraulic components and insulation. Depending on your service package, we support you by WhatsApp, telephone or video call.
Electrical and grid-relevant work as well as necessary interventions in a refrigerant circuit are reserved for qualified specialists.
Result: The system is assembled and the structure documented.

7. Conduct a system check
During the agreed video check, we assess the visible hydraulic connections using photos, video and project documents, looking for obvious discrepancies and whether the arrangement is plausible. Concealed pipes, internal components and connections that cannot be seen cannot be fully inspected. The video check is not formal acceptance, commissioning or permission to operate the system, and does not replace any required on-site inspections. Please request it at least five calendar days in advance; the appointment must be confirmed.
Issues can then be corrected before the on-site appointment, reducing the risk of an aborted or postponed visit.
Result: outstanding issues are identified and the system is prepared.
8. Commissioning and further support
Once preparation is complete, commissioning is arranged. Our qualified technicians or a suitable specialist service carry it out on site, according to the agreed scope. The system and settings are checked. The heating curve and other parameters can then be optimised using actual operating data.
Depending on the service package, DiY-Heizung continues to help with settings, remote maintenance and additional orders.
Result: The heat pump is in operation and can be further optimized.
Who takes over what tasks?
| Parties | Typical tasks |
|---|---|
| DiY-Heizung | Initial assessment, coordination of calculations, system planning, component selection, project documents, installation support, system checks and organisation of commissioning |
| You | Provide building information, agree your DIY tasks, install in line with the plans, document progress and coordinate local contractors |
| Qualified contractors | Electrical and grid-related work, any necessary refrigerant work, and other tasks reserved for appropriately qualified professionals |
| Qualified technicians or specialist service | final commissioning on site in accordance with the agreed scope of services |
The exact responsibilities are agreed for each project. DIY installation does not mean you have to do everything alone.
Where projects often falter in practice
Typical delays arise when information about the existing building is incomplete, installation locations or pipe routes change late, an electrician is only approached shortly before commissioning, or components are ordered before the plans are finished.
Record decisions and changes early, match staged deliveries to the installation schedule, and take photos throughout the installation rather than only at the end.
How much can DIY installation save?
Savings depend on the building, system design and how much work you do yourself. Foundations, pipework, hydraulic installation and insulation can account for a substantial part of the installation work. However, no fixed saving or percentage can be guaranteed.
After technical planning, your project-specific quote shows the included components and services, the local specialist work required and the tasks you can undertake.
Can a DIY heat pump kit qualify for a grant?
Grant funding may also be available for DIY projects. Your own labour is not eligible. Material costs directly related to the installation may qualify under the applicable rules, provided that correct installation and expenditure are properly confirmed.
The grant application, contract and start of work must follow the prescribed sequence. Grant rates, limits and deadlines change over time, so current figures are provided on our grants page.
Frequent questions about the process
Do I need a heat load calculation before I contact you?
No. If you do not already have a suitable calculation, it can be prepared as part of the technical planning.
Can the material be delivered in several stages?
Staged deliveries can be arranged depending on the project and availability. They need to match the installation sequence and allow for safe storage of the components.
Who makes the electrical connection?
Electrical connections and grid-related work must be carried out by an electrical contractor listed in the relevant installer register.
What happens if questions arise during assembly?
Depending on your service package, DiY-Heizung provides support by WhatsApp, telephone or video call. Agree any changes to the plans before implementing them.
DIY installation with a clear project plan
A DIY heat pump kit combines suitable work you can do yourself with professional planning, coordinated components and organised commissioning. The heat pump, hydraulic design and heat emitters must be matched to the building before installation begins.
The eight steps give you clear outcomes and handover points, from the first building information to commissioning.

Planning delivery date and on-site commissioning
Tell us your preferred delivery date within 21 calendar days of accepting the quote. If you request delivery later, we check availability and manufacturer prices. Any change to an agreed price requires your express consent. Prices and delivery scheduling(German).
Please request an agreed on-site commissioning visit at least ten calendar days before your preferred date; the appointment must be confirmed. The hydraulic system must be complete, ready for operation and filled, and the electrical installation must comply with the manufacturer instructions. Your quote defines the precise scope. We do not provide or broker a complete installation service.
